HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break and you are ready to return to school feeling rested.

Our main topic this term is the Stone Age. We are going to be learning about all the different aspects of life for a person living in the Stone Age, and how they contributed to the lifestyle we live now.

Throughout this term we will continue to build on the writing and grammar skills we have been developing in Autumn term.  We are going to be writing some fantastic adventure stories based on explorers and time travel!

Please ensure that you listen and encourage your children to read as much as possible at home! Please remember that your child does not have to just read story books, they are encouraged to read a range of texts such as newspapers and magazines. Guided reading will continue to be done daily at school, focusing on developing comprehension skills. We are continuing to read our year group books.

We will be looking at several topics in maths this term but will be concentrating on developing the basic maths skills of numbers and place value, addition and subtraction, and multiplication and division as these are the core skills which are needed to be successful in all of the other areas of maths.

We will be continuing the work with the Maths Passports and maths targets which were sent home at the end of Autumn term. Children will need to practice at home to extend their understanding further! We will be starting a 99 times table and a mental arithmetic challenge this term, with an aim to improve our mental calculation ability.

Please also be aware of the following:

Homework -  Will be given out on Tuesdays to be returned the following Monday. If your child requires any help myself or Mrs Dobson will be happy to help them at school.

Spellings – Focused spellings will be handed out weekly for your child to learn at home and will be given time at school to practice their spellings. Children will be tested on their spellings every Monday.

PE – Please remember to bring in your child’s PE kit in the first week of term. Your child must have both an indoor and an outdoor kit this include two sets of shoes. May I suggest trainers for the outdoor kit and a soft-soled shoe for inside. Please ensure all kit and uniform, including shoes, are clearly labelled with your child’s name. Swimming will continue until half term.

If you have any questions or wish to discuss anything further, please do not hesitate to call into the school before or after teaching hours.

Kind regards,

Miss Boustead
