Welcome back! I hope you had an eventful yet relaxing Easter break. This next term is very busy with Year 2 and 6 SATS coming up and lots of exciting sporting events. During the week of SATS test (KS2 week beginning 14th May) we ask that you encourage your children to be respectful and responsible during this time to create the best environment possible to help the Year 6s achieve.

Our main topic this term is Europe. We will be looking at how the physical features of Europe helped to shape the countries and people living in them today.

Literacy:

For their first few weeks we will be focusing on the book The Arrival by Shaun Tan. This picture book will be used to improve our ability to develop characters in stories and from this we will write letters and diaries as those characters.

We will then move onto writing an information report about Europe, using and building on what we learn during our Topic lessons.

A specific grammar and punctuation lesson has been introduced this term. A lack of understanding of sentence structure and how grammar is used within sentences has been identified as a general class weakness. These lessons will aim to improve the children’s understanding of how they can develop a simple sentence in a grammatically correct way.

Reading:

Please ensure that you listen and encourage your children to read as much as possible as home! Please remember that your child does not have to just read story books, they are encouraged to read a range of texts such as newspapers and magazines. Guided reading will continue to be done daily at school, focusing on developing comprehension skills.

Maths:

We are continuing to cover all of our maths objectives, building on what the children have learnt in Autumn and Spring. When possible, please practice basic math skills of place value and calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) as knowing these will help your children to succeed in maths.

We will be continuing the work with the Maths Passports. They will need to practice at home to extend their understanding further! We will be continuing out Times Table and a mental arithmetic challenge this term, over the last term there has been a massive improvement of score with the children eager to beat their score. Please help your child to learn their times tables!

Please also be aware of the following:

Homework - Homework will now be given out every Thursday and will be expected back on the following Tuesday.

Spellings – Focused spellings will be handed out on the homework sheets for your child to learn at home and will be given time at school to practice their spellings. Children will be tested on their spellings every Tuesday.

PE – Please remember to bring in your child’s PE kit in the first week of term. Your child must have both an indoor and an outdoor kit this include two sets of shoes. Please ensure all kit and uniform, including shoes, are clearly labelled with your child’s name.

If you have any questions or wish to discuss anything further, please do not hesitate to call into the school before or after hours.

Kind regards,

Miss Boustead
