Class 2 Curriculum letter Summer 2

Dear Parents/Carers

Welcome back! I hope you have had an enjoyable half term break.

Outlined below is the work we plan to cover in the various curriculum areas over the Summer Term.

Please also be aware of the following:

Homework – given out on a Tuesday to be returned the following Monday. Children in Class 2 should be able to complete their homework with minimal intervention as they are independent learners. However, if they need help with this I will be happy to help them at school or after school if your child attends homework club.

Reading – Guided reading will be done daily at school but it is important that children continue with their reading at home and that this is recorded in their reading records. All children will have a current reading book that they bring home from school. If the children choose to read another book, that can be recorded in their record too! Questions are enclosed in children’s reading records to help their comprehension skills develop at home when reading too.

Spellings – We will have focused spelling lessons during the week to help improve our spelling in our writing. Children will no longer be tested on spellings during the week, however, spelling lists will continue to be sent home every Friday for any additional practice at home.

Literacy – our topic this half term is Fables. We will begin the half term by reading a range of fables and writing our own book reviews. We will then move onto planning and writing our first draft. Peer assessment will help with our editing of our first draft and will be used to help write our final fable. We will follow this with a poetry unit, which will include writing our own poems. To finish the year, we will be having our own class debate based on our current topic.

Numeracy – we will begin this term using written methods to solve calculations, including the column method for addition and subtraction. We will develop our understanding of the methods we are already familiar with and become familiar with new methods. Alongside this, we will continue to strengthen our mental maths skills, in particular our times tables!

Science our new science topic for the following half term is habitats. We will plan and conduct our own experiments to find our more about different adaptations. We will also collect and organise data using classification keys, discover more about food webs and create our own life cycle diagram.

RE – will be taught by Miss Rutt for the following half term. Our new unit of work includes the different beliefs of Christians.

PSHE – our new topic for the summer term will cover changes within ourselves and the environment we live in. We will discuss and explore the world around us in more detail and how we can live safely in different environments.

PE – will continue on a Wednesday afternoon with Mr Ellis. The children will be continuing with outdoor PE sessions as much as possible, so please ensure they have the appropriate clothing, including outdoor trainers.

MFL – will continue on a Wednesday afternoon with Madam Cordingley.

Art – our art topic for the term is drawing. We will spend time using our sketchbooks to develop our drawing skills by observing and recording our surrounding environment with different drawing techniques, including a walk into the village to sketch different surroundings.

Geography – for this half term our geography topic is a focus on global mapping. We will be following and writing our own directions and creating a new map for a friend to follow.

Music – will be taught by Miss Rutt for the Summer Term.
