Class 2 Curriculum letter Autumn term 1

Dear Parents/Carers

I hope that you have all had a wonderful summer break and are ready for the new academic year. I am extremely excited to be joining the team at Sherburn Church of England Primary School and have already been shown a very warm welcome by all of the children at the school.

Below is an outline of the work we plan to cover in the various curriculum areas over the Autumn term:

Our main term topic is the ancient civilisation of the Mayans, which will be covered in lessons such as history, geography and art. We will be delving into the timeline of the Mayans and their environment, trying to grasp an understand of how they lived and survived in the Rainforests of South America.

Throughout this term we are aiming to develop the children’s skills of extended story writing. They will be given several opportunities throughout the term to create their own stories while applying skills they learn in our grammar lessons.

It is extremely important that you encourage your child to read as much as possible at home. Becoming a successful reader will aid your child greatly in their education and will have a great impact on their writing and vocabulary. Guided reading will be done daily at school and will focus on developing comprehension skills. Please remember that your child does not have to just read story books, they are encouraged to read a range of texts such as newspapers and magazines.

We will be looking at several topics in maths this term but will be concentrating on developing the basic maths skills of numbers and place value, addition and subtraction, and multiplication and division as these are the core skills which are needed to be successful in all of the other areas of maths.

We will be continuing the work with the Maths Passports – Please see your child’s Home/School book for their current targets. They will need to practice at home to extend their understanding further!

Please also be aware of the following:

Homework -  Will be given out on Tuesdays to be returned the following Monday. If your child requires any help myself or Mrs Dobson will be happy to help them at school.

Spellings – Focused spellings will be handed out weekly for your child to learn at home and will be given time at school to practice their spellings. Children will be tested on their spellings weekly.

PE – Please remember to bring in your child’s PE kit in the first week of term. Your child must have both an indoor and an outdoor kit this include two sets of shoes. May I suggest sturdy trainers, that you don’t mind getting muddy, for the outdoor kit and a soft-soled trainer for inside.

Please ensure all kit and uniform, including shoes, are clearly labelled with your child’s name.

If you have any questions or wish to discuss anything further, please do not hesitate to call into the school before or after hours.

Kind regards,

Miss Boustead
